This is why I’m not an accountant

26 April, 2006 (08:15) | Economy, Politics | By: ricjames

I am currently slogging through the 10-K and quarterly and annual reports from ExxonMobile in an effort to confirm the roughly 10% profit margin figure being bandied about with regards to the oil industry. To say that this is rough going in pulling out common-sense meaning from these reports is an understatement. The 10% figure [...]

Russia’s Sukhoi Design Bureau has a new bird in the making

25 April, 2006 (22:17) | Aviation, Military, Technology | By: ricjames

No sooner did I flip back to the Popular Mechanics article I referenced regarding the alternative fuels when my eye was caught by a headline there regarding a new fighter aircraft being tested by Russia’s Sukhoi Design Bureau. Sukhoi’s S-37 is a radically different aircraft. It’s a forward-swept wing (FSW) design which looks exactly like [...]

PopMech compares alternative fuels

25 April, 2006 (17:01) | Environment, Technology | By: ricjames

Just in time for this kind of debate, the folks at Popular Mechanics have come up with an article in their May 2006 issue (and available on-line here) that offers a comparison of the various alternative fuels. This, ladies and gentlemen, is a must read. The article gives you a rundown on all the contenders [...]

Oil companies not making large profits?

25 April, 2006 (08:55) | Economy, Environment, Politics, Technology | By: ricjames

Unfortunately, I don’t have the time to do the research at the moment, but I wanted to point out a post over on Captain’s Quarters regarding the President’s recent call for an investigation into whether price manipulation and gouging are going on at the gas pump lately. Captain Ed is a good writer and he’s [...]

RightWingSparkle takes up at the Houston Chronicle as TexasSparkle

25 April, 2006 (07:56) | Blogging, Internet, Politics | By: ricjames

Thanks to Power Line I take note that Kathleen McKinley of RightWingSparkle has become a blogger for the Houston Chronicle. This is a good move on the Chronicle's part and I applaud their efforts to diversify their publication, idealogically. Ms. McKinley introduces herself: I started my blog Rightwingsparkle almost 2 years ago. What I really [...]

Should be interesting to watch gas prices now

24 April, 2006 (23:08) | Economy, Politics, Uncategorized | By: ricjames

I find it simply unsupportable that the gas and oil companies operating in this country can be fighting serious shortages and making record profits in the billions of dollars per quarter. If their costs were going up as fast as the prices they’re charging the consumers, their profits would be near flatline, not spiking upward. [...]

LCRC meeting tonite much less fractious

24 April, 2006 (22:30) | Politics, Virginia Politics | By: ricjames

I am a Republican and I joined the local Committee back in 2003 ahead of our County Board of Supervisors election. It was my first foray into active politics and the experience was a very positive one. Through the work of the Loudoun County Republican Committee (LCRC) 5 additional Republicans were elected to County office [...]

Problem noted with RSS feed

24 April, 2006 (06:06) | Blogging, Internet, Uncategorized | By: ricjames

I've noted a problem this morning with this blog's RSS feed. One of the features of WordPress is that I can insert a tag into a post's text that creates a break, of sorts, in how the post is displayed. It presents a "click here for more" link to you, the reader, that lets you [...]

Bin Laden directs forces to Sudan?

23 April, 2006 (13:42) | GWOT | By: ricjames

A new bin Laden tape has purportedly surfaced. In this one, he is urging his fighters to head to Sudan. Osama bin Laden issued ominous new threats in an audiotape broadcast Sunday, saying the West was at war with Islam and calling on his followers to go to Sudan to fight a proposed U.N. force. [...]
