Kansas clamps down on underage marriage
Apparently, Kansas lawmakers were outraged by the news of a pregnant 14-year-old Nebraska girl who drove over the state line to Kansas so she and her 22-year-old boyfriend could get married. The legal age to do so in Kansas is 14, hence the trip. Well, Kansas’ government has had enough of that so they overwhelmingly passed legislation to raise the minimum age – to 15.
On Thursday, the Kansas House vote 119-0 to approve a bill that would prohibit anyone under the age of 15 from marrying in Kansas and would set strict limits for would-be brides or grooms under the age of 18. The Senate approved it a day earlier, 36-4.
Now that’s telling them!
OK, read the story and you’ll see there’s more to it than that, but it just struck me as funny that a 14-year-old’s marriage caused an outcry but a 15-year-old’s would be OK.
