Newest discovered dwarf planet in solar system officially named ‘Eris’
The planetary body that would have been the 10th planet in our solar system, formally designated 2003 UBR13, has been officially named. The International Astronomical Union has dubbed the new dwarf planet Eris after the Greek goddess of chaos and strife. Fitting, considering what her discovery did for the IAU.
At first, Eris was considered to be the 10th planet in our solar system with part of the reasoning for that being that she’s bigger than Pluto. That only led to a resurgence of the argument that Pluto wasn’t really a planet, either, which itself culminated in the meeting a few weeks ago that demoted Pluto from planet to dwarf planet. Eris now joins Pluto and Ceres in that new category.
Elementary school astronomy has some new info in it, now.
