Yet another Hollywood bash-job on Catholics, Jesus
Glenn Reynolds of Instapundit has, on many occasions, mentioned that we Christians tend to get our faith bashed by the media and Hollywood because those agencies feel totally secure in the knowledge that we aren’t going to call for them to be beheaded or bomb their offices. I think he’s right, and today’s example comes to us courtesy of Paul Verhoeven, the director noted for this work on “Basic Instinct.” Verhoeven is making the claim that Jesus Christ didn’t come into this world as a result of the Holy Spirit and the Immaculate Conception. He got here because Mary was a rape victim. Yeah, you read that right…
In his upcoming biography of Jesus, “Basic Instinct” director Paul Verhoeven will make the shocking claim that Christ probably was the son of Mary and a Roman soldier who raped her during the Jewish uprising in Galilee, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The media report apparently paraphrases because Verhoeven is reputed to have worded this bit of rampant speculation as saying Mary may have been raped. The second I read this lead paragraph, I knew I was dealing with someone literally making this up as he went along. Others far more educated on the matter than I have weighed in as well:
Catholic League President Bill Donohue called Verhoeven’s claim “laughable.”
“Here we go again with idle speculation grounded in absolutely nothing,” Donohue told FOXNews.com. “He has no empirical evidence to support his claim, which is why they say ‘may have.’”
The story goes on to tell you that this film is based on a book Verhoeven has been working on for 20 years. Like Donohue says in the report, he works on this for 20 years and the best he’s got is a “probably”? And that’s “probably” based on nothing more than Verhoeven’s life experience, nothing concrete.
I’ll tell you what, I’ll consider Verhoeven to be something more than an opportunistic, clueless imbecile with an ulterior motive against Christians and the Catholic Church in particular when he announces his film biography wherein he’s going to press the case that Mohammed was really a gay pedophile masking his state in life behind a bloody diversionary campaign. Let’s see him do that and consider the differences in how he’s received.
