Paper or plastic? Now, the question is for your newspaper, too.
This just in from the “cool tech” department: a flexible electronic reader might be your newspaper in the years to come. The video I’ve linked is on CNN (YouTube here in case CNN doesn’t work for you) and covers the introduction of a product aimed squarely at the paper-for-reading-material market. Ladies & gentlemen, Plastic Logic:
Plastic Logic is using our proprietary technology leadership in plastic electronics to create a range of products enabling information access, organization, and consumption. Our first product, focused on reading digital content, will enter the market in early 2009.Differentiated by a stunning form factor (the size of 8.5 x 11-inch paper), the Plastic Logic reader features a big readable display. Yet it’s thinner than a pad of paper, lighter than many business periodicals, and offers a high-quality reading experience – better than alternatives of paper or other electronic readers on the market today.
The video from CNN gives you a very good idea as to the size and weight of the item as well as the display resolution. Unlike PDA’s and laptops, the Plastic Logic reader doesn’t appear to emit light so it’s as easy to read as a book. The size and user interface would be fantastic to use in close environments like the average airline coach seat where laptops are increasingly hard to deploy due to space.
Now we just need to hear how much they’re expected to go for!
