Words to live by this election eve

Sent to me by one of Loudoun’s greats, Randy Minchew:

‘The public cannot be too curious concerning the characters of public men.”

Samuel Adams

Indeed. And more:

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away men’s initiative and independence.
You cannot help men permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.”

There appears to be some contention about who said that last one, with some saying Abraham Lincoln and others saying William J. H. Bloetcker. I contend that it doesn’t matter who said it, because the truth of those statements remains regardless of the voice who spoke them or whose hand moved the pen that wrote them. These truths and Sam Adam’s caution that free men must remain vigilant into the characters of those who would see to rule them are at the heart of this contest in which we find ourselves embroiled. Here’s hoping all Americans feel the truth in their hearts even if they don’t hear the words aloud.
