What’s in a name?

On the face of it, the incident where a New Jersey supermarket has refused to decorate a cake with the name of the 3-year-old looks like a company taking out its policies on a little kid. Until you get to the actual name, that is. That’d be “Adolph Hitler Campbell,” 3-year-old from Easton, PA.

The father of 3-year-old Adolf Hitler Campbell, denied a birthday cake with the child’s full name on it by one New Jersey supermarket, is asking for a little tolerance.

Heath Campbell and his wife, Deborah, are upset not only with the decision made by the nearby ShopRite, but also with an outpouring of angry Internet postings in response to a local newspaper article about the cake.

Heath Campbell, who is 35, said in an interview Tuesday that people should look forward, not back, and accept change.

Well, Heath old buddy, people tend not to “accept” what’s thrown in their faces. As for tolerance, perhaps you should have thought about the feelings of the people in your community and shown some common respect and decency before you decided to demand their tolerance and acceptance.

Campbell says he chose the name, “because he liked the name and because ‘no one else in the world would have that name.’” First off, there’s a reason no one else in the world has chosen that name and that’s because – like it or not – a celebration of the man’s name unavoidably draws the man’s deeds into it. And no one civilized wants to celebrate what that man did or stood for.

Second, the implication here is that the father had no political intent in naming his innocent child after such a  universally hated tyrant and monster. After all, he says he just liked the name. Well, I’m calling bullshit on that one. He knew full well the situation he was putting his son into by slapping that label on him at birth and his desire for both attention and to be considered “cutting edge” in terms of his political speech allowed him to ignore the consequences. That a man would do that to his own son is disgusting and proof positive that some men should never reproduce. My heart goes out to his son, whom I hope will take advantage of the chance to change his own name at the earliest opportunity. Until then, perhaps he can introduce himself as “Dolph”, like Dolph Lundgren. Say what you want about his movie appearances, a guy could do a lot worse.

Such as take after his father who uses his kid as a billboard so he can feel “with it” and hip.

Actually, the lie really comes out when you read that another of his children has the middle names “Aryan nation”.
