IL House approves impeachment measure against Blagojevich, 114-1

9 January, 2009 (12:37) | Politics | By: ricjames

By a vote of 114-1 the Illinois House has voted to impeach Gov. Blagojevich:

The decision was nearly unanimous with a vote of 114-1.

The action sets the stage for a Senate trial on whether he should be thrown out of office for corruption and abuse of power.

House members found evidence that the two-term Democrat had abused his power, including improperly spending tax money, adopting programs without legislative approval and violating state hiring laws. He’s denied wrongdoing.

Brief aside: how’d you like to be that 1 guy who voted against? Hehâ„¢.

The Lt. Gov. in the story says Blagojevich should “face reality” and resign. I think he’s right.

That one dissenter was Rep. Milton Patterson, a Chicago Democrat. His term ends next week. For some inexplicable reason, “he said he didn’t feel that it was his job to vote to impeach the governor.” I have no idea whose job he thought it was. He did say that eh read the committee’s report, but “it was just there was not enough for me to feel comfortable with a decision to do that…I did not feel comfortable voting based upon what I heard and read, simple as that.”

Didn’t think it was his job? Wow, that’s a good one. But with only a week to go, it does him no damage. And it got him into the history books, I suppose.
