Instapundit guilty of “guilt-by-nepotism” attitude?

7 January, 2009 (08:26) | Blogging, Politics | By: ricjames

The rumor circulating over the past several days that Jeb Bush, President George Bush’s brother, might be considering a Senate run was apparently enough to cause minor aneurysms in the Leftoshere. Jeb himself has laid those rumors to rest when he said on the record that he’s not running. Glenn Reynolds at Instapundit had this to say about it:

JEB BUSH WON’T RUN FOR SENATE. Good. By all accounts he’s a decent guy, but we could use a bit less dynastic politics these days . . . .

So, what is the Blogfather saying, here? That a person who, by all accounts, is a “decent guy” and has actual, real-world experience in legislative work shouldn’t run for office because there’s been 2 members of his family run successfully for offices of their own? That he should be avoiding public service because other members of his family have gone down that professional path? We’re to applaud the notion that guilt-by-nepotism appears to be the primary reason this guy shouldn’t be elected?

I don’t find that to be a laudable attitude at all. A man should be assessed on the basis of his own work and actions, not those of his family. Judge him by his own decisions, his own associations not those of a father or brother.
