What if we change the word to “white”?
We thought it might prove edifying to substitute the word “white’” for the words Latino/a, Hispanic, Puerto Rican and ‘people of color’ in Ms. Sotomayor’s oft-cited 2001 speech at the University of California, Berkeley.
Here are some of the highlights, posted by Steve Gilbert:
Edifying, indeed. Read the speech with the color substituted and honestly answer the question at the end. Would we even consider such a racist for the Supreme Court, or any other court in America?

And now a local alert for my fellow Loudouners: As I was driving to the office this morning I noticed a highway message board lit up just as I transitioned from Route 7 to Route 28 near the Dulles Town Center Mall. The new ramp at Nokes Blvd will be opened for eastbound traffic on Monday, June 8. At the same time, they’re going to be closing the intersection at Severn Way, the very next road to the south on Route 28.
This was always the plan in the Route 28 corridor project, to turn Route 28 into a limited-access highway. (Meaning limited entry/exit points, not limited in who or what can use it.) You can see by selecting the Nokes location on the project map that both Severn Way and the next intersection, Steeplechase Drive, are both slated for closure with the traffic to locations east of Route 28 that have been reached on those roads being routed over to Atlantic Blvd. On the west side they are extending Pacific Blvd to eventually run from Pacific’s current end, down south of the W&OD trail, to meet up with Nokes Blvd. I believe they are working on that part right now.
In any case, if you’ve been used to turning onto Severn Way for access to whatever you’re getting at, be prepared for a change this Monday. You’ll have to get off at Nokes and turn right at the 1st light, Atlantic Blvd. Severn Way will be the 3rd light ahead of you and you can go from there.
