Updated pictures of the Sikorsky X2

23 October, 2010 (09:52) | Aviation, Human Interest, Military, Technology, Transportation | By: ricjames

I wrote about the Sikorsky X2 back in September and thought I’d pass along this link to a series of pictures of the X2. There’s some updates in there about their push to get a contract to bring it into production and the pictures are just pretty cool.

Auto-aiming sniper rifle on the horizon

3 October, 2010 (22:33) | Human Interest, Military, Technology | By: ricjames

Good snipers are the stuff of legends. WWII Soviet sniper Vasily Zaytsev killed 225 German soldiers and officers, including 6 enemy snipers in what amounted to long-range duels. American Marine sniper Carlos Hathcock was so effective the NVA put a $30,000 bounty on his head. He managed to take out an opponent sniper on one [...]

Rapid rotor: Sikorsky X2 hits 300 mph in test flight

16 September, 2010 (16:28) | Aviation, Human Interest, Military, Technology, Transportation | By: ricjames

Earlier this year I was in downtown DC for a variety of customer meetings and I happened to pass near the Washington Convention Center. There was a military trade show going on and helicopter manufacturer Sikorsky had set up a static display tent on the lawn of the block right in front of the Center, [...]

Iran’s new weapon: the “ambassador of death” “unmanned bomber”

22 August, 2010 (15:39) | Military, Technology | By: ricjames

Iran is preening for the weapons-reporting cameras, again, this time with the announcement of their first domestically-built “unmanned bomber aircraft.” Old Pres’ Ahmadinejad called it an “ambassador of death” to Iran’s enemies which, most certainly, he counts the US among. Interesting name, assuming the actual name is the Persian word for that phrase. I can’t [...]

Travesty in the thousands, dishonor where honor should rest: graves in Arlington might be mislabeled

28 July, 2010 (15:46) | Genealogy, Human Interest, Military, Politics | By: ricjames

For almost 20 years I have pursued my family’s history, the study of genealogy. It’s taken me from the archive room at the National Archives, where I scrolled through dozens of microfilm reels, through forgotten family records and into the reaches of the Internet, a territory I know very well. Lately, there’s been a new [...]

Russia announces their latest fighter aircraft design, claims it’s superior to American F-22 raptor

19 June, 2010 (11:49) | Aviation, Military, Politics, Technology | By: ricjames

America’s top-of-the-line air superiority fighter aircraft is about to have some company in the “5th Generation Fighter” category. Yesterday, Russia’s PM Vladmir Putin announced the introduction of their latest design, the Sukhoi T-50. She’s a pretty ship, that’s for sure. Knowing the success of Sukhoi’s other designs I have no doubt she’s a capable bird, [...]

Hats off, ladies & gents, to the memory and remaining survivors of the opening action of taking back Europe from Hitler’s Nazi Germany 66 years ago today. The Normandy Invasion was a massive amphibious and airborne effort replete with stories of tragic loss and towering heroism. If you don’t know much about, go have a [...]

Ebola vaccine shows real promise

5 June, 2010 (17:19) | Human Interest, Medicine, Military, Science, Technology | By: ricjames

Ebola. The name conjures visions of a hideous death, far too gruesome and far too slow. And with a 90% mortality rate, it’s as close to certain death to contract it as most of us can conceive. Until now, possibly: After decades of unsuccessful research, a collaboration based out of the Army’s labs at Fort [...]

Remembering on this Memorial Day

31 May, 2010 (08:33) | GWOT, History, Human Interest, Military, Politics, Religion | By: ricjames

Today as most of us enjoy the day off I urge you to take a moment to recall the meaning of this day. We have all enjoyed the benefit of the actions of those fallen soldiers we honor. It is in thanks for those actions that we should pause, remember, and offer up a prayer [...]
